Position Overview: The Ginew/Golden Eagle Program is a year-round after school program serving Native American youth ages 5-18. Located at the Minneapolis American Indian Center the program follows a 23-unit, culturally specific curriculum. The curriculum is designed to highlight and enhance the resiliency of Native American youth. The mission of the Ginew/Golden Eagle Program is to help Native American youth strengthen and develop life skills that will give them the knowledge to make healthy choices. The goals of the Program are: To strengthen the self-esteem and sense of identity of Native American youth by offering cultural activities; to decrease the risk of alcohol and substance abuse by Native American youth by offering chemical awareness education involving talking circles, drug awareness educations sessions and chemical free activities; to increase the academic success of the Native American youth through educational programming; and to increase physical well-being of Native American youth by offering recreational activities and health education.



Position Responsibilities:

∑ Maintain relationship with current community partners, University of Minnesota and Normandale Community College

∑ Increasing numbers of volunteers by working with our current community partners

∑ Create new partnerships with other colleges and organizations in the metro area

∑ Develop resources and trainings for volunteers unfamiliar with the Native American community

∑ Maintain communication between volunteers and program staff

∑ Organize and implement volunteer recognition

∑ Research needs of the community

∑ Form contacts with local non-profit and other organizations in need of volunteers

∑ Develop twice monthly community service projects

∑ Maintain hours of community service completed by each child

∑ Work with full-time staff to implement educational programming that addresses the needs of the students that is identified by teachers and parents





Requirements

∑ Must be 18 years old*

∑ U.S. citizen or U.S. National or have status as a Lawful Permanent Resident Alien

∑ Interest in youth, service, education, and non-profit work

∑ Knowledge of the juvenile justice system and American Indian youth and family intervention resources

∑ Experience working with youth in a program setting

∑ Knowledge of the Minneapolis American Indian community and the needs of American Indian children

∑ Excellent communication skills

∑ Love children and enjoy helping them learn

∑ Demonstrate an ability to initiate and follow through on tasks; be a self starter

∑ Must enjoy working on a staff team

∑ Must have a valid driver’s license, good driving record and be insurable a time of hire.

∑ Must be willing to work evenings and occasional Saturdays

Desirable Characteristics

∑ Associates or Bachelor of Arts Degree in community or youth development, education, or related field

∑ Strong written and oral communication skills

∑ Volunteer experience and desire to develop a strong ethic of service

∑ Experience working collaboratively with youth and adults

∑ Commitment to positive youth development

∑ Able to deal effectively with ambiguity of tasks and able to take the initiative

∑ Self-motivated, able to work independently without daily supervision—strong organizational skills a must

∑ Has initiative to see and follow through with “next steps” to be taken

∑ Able to present oneself in a highly professional manner and be an ambassador of the program



Benefits

As a full-time AmeriCorps member, Promise Fellows serve 1700 hours from Sept 1 to August 31 and receive: Modest Living Allowance (appx. $1,000/month); Health Insurance; Qualified Student Loan Deferment; $4725 Education Award; Ongoing, extensive support and training



*Please note that final candidates will be required to successfully pass a background check before being officially enrolled by the Minnesota Alliance With Youth.
